Google, African Union, and YouTube Collaborate for #DiscoverMyAfrica to Celebrate Africa Month
Google, the African Union (AU), and YouTube have collaborated to launch #DiscoverMyAfrica, a month-long celebration aimed at highlighting African creativity, innovation, and heritage. This initiative coincides with Africa Month, during which creators are encouraged to showcase their unique perspectives on the continent through YouTube Shorts. Alongside this, special events and resources will accentuate Africa’s dynamic creative industries.
The #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge is designed to inspire creators from across the continent to exhibit Africa’s diverse cultural richness, encompassing its music, art, cuisine, fashion, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Chido Mpemba, the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy, emphasized the significance of #DiscoverMyAfrica, stating that it empowers African youth to globally share their stories and cultural heritage. The partnership with Google facilitates creative expression and dialogue on crucial topics such as content responsibility, digital preservation, and the impact of AI on Africa’s creative sectors. This collaboration aligns with the vision of a digitally-enabled Africa that utilizes its cultural wealth for economic advancement and social development.
YouTube Music is actively contributing to the festivities by curating two dedicated playlists: “Africa’s Next Wave” and “Africa Superstars.” These playlists will spotlight both emerging talents and established African artists, underscoring the continent’s position as a global musical force.
Moreover, YouTube Music Nights in Nigeria and South Africa will feature live performances by leading Afrobeats and Amapiano artists, offering unforgettable experiences for attendees.
Exclusive premieres and workshops further enrich the #DiscoverMyAfrica experience, particularly in Nigeria. These include:
Spa with Osas: Nollywood star Osas Ighodaro explores the opulent side of Lagos, offering viewers a glimpse into luxurious experiences.
All of Us: A drama series produced by Enioluwa and The Geng, which delves into the intricacies of high school elites and their hidden secrets.
Shaggi’s Palava: Comedy sensation Broda Shaggi guarantees laughs with his latest project, showcasing his unique humor.
Workshops: Tailored sessions for filmmakers, musicians, and content creators will furnish valuable tools and insights to enhance their skills and expand their digital presence.
Addy Awofisayo, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa at YouTube, reiterated the platform's commitment to supporting the diverse voices and talents within Africa’s creative landscape. These initiatives provide essential resources and platforms for African creators to share their narratives and connect with global audiences.
